If you have a proposal for an article or even a themed issue, we are always happy to hear from you. To discuss your ideas, please <\/span><a href=\"mailto:francis@socialisthistorysociety.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact Francis King, the editor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To submit an article for consideration by the editors, please ensure that it conforms to the style guide below, and send it to us as an e-mail attachment, either in MS Word [.doc; .docx] or Open Document Formats [.odt], to [this link]. We endeavour to acknowledge submissions as soon as possible; feedback and readers reports where appropriate may take a few weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please refer to these style guidelines when preparing your contribution:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Style guide for Socialist History\u00a0articles<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Length<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually 6000-9000 words unless otherwise arranged with the\u00a0editor.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Quotations<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use \u2018single quotes\u2019 for quotations \u2018and \u201cdouble inside\u00a0single\u201d?\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long quotations should be indented without quotation marks, in normal font and with a line space at beginning and\u00a0end.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punctuation and footnote indicators normally outside of quotes; punctuation inside only if sentence quoted in\u00a0full.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Spelling and\u00a0capitalisation<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use English not\u00a0US\u00a0spellings, e.g. -ise, not -ize; First World War, not World War\u00a0I.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spell out acronyms\/abbreviations on first use, e.g.: Independent Labour Party (ILP).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower case preferred for all except proper names, e.g. socialists, the left, parliament.\u00a0 However, use upper case for all full proper names, e.g. the Labour Party, but the party.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Dates and\u00a0figures<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give dates in form 12 May 1978; decades as 1900s,\u00a01880s.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spell out numbers to one\u00a0hundred.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence spell out centuries (including\u00a0twenty-first!).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>References<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socialist History<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses endnotes, not footnotes. Please keep these for references, suggestions for comparisons and other <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brief<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remarks. More substantial points should either be made in the main body of the text, or omitted.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In text, give footnote indicators\u00a0thus.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">62 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If possible, please insert them at the end of a sentence, and in any event after punctuation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Articles and unpublished sources (including theses) should be cited according to this pattern: Andy Croft, \u2018Mapless in the wilderness. Randall Swingler and 1956\u2019,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socialist History<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 19 (2001),\u00a0pp.44-70.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">References for books cited should on first citation give the Author, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Title<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Place of Publication, date of publication and p. number, e.g. Alison Macleod,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Death of Uncle Joe. A memoir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, London, 1997, p.72. Use contracted forms for second and subsequent citations, e.g., Macleod,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncle Joe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0p.53.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">References to online sources should indicate the author and title of the material cited, as well as giving the web address of the resource. However, if the online resource is simply a scan of material originally published on paper, please reference the source as if you had used the original article or book (i.e. without the web address).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reference notes please avoid\u00a0all Latinisms apart from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Headings<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socialist History<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0uses short sub-headings to break up text, rather than as \u2018section headings\u2019.\u00a0Please provide these headings if\u00a0possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use upper and lower case for title of article (Mapless in the wilderness), lower case for headings (Culture, politics and the\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Reasoner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Abstracts, key words and author details<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please supply an abstract of 120-200 words for your article, as well as four key words<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the \u2018notes on contributors\u2019 section please supply two or three sentences about yourself.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>General<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please use a bold typeface to indicate your headings; use italics where\u00a0required, please avoid underlines except in quotations where the original was underlined.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please provide brief contextual information on names or events mentioned which may be unfamiliar to readers, e.g. the\u00a0MP\u00a0and former South Wales miners\u2019 leader, David Watts\u00a0Morgan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Style guide for Socialist History book\u00a0reviews<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socialist History does not accept unsolicited book reviews. If you would like to review for the journal please\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"mailto:kirbydi@tcd.ie\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact the reviews editor,\u00a0Dianne Kirby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We can usually arrange for review copies to be supplied. We also publish reviews of multiple books or volumes, as well as standalone review articles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Length<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually 1000-1500 words (per book, in the case of reviews considering more than one volume).
